Bay Area Mail Carriers Robbed at Gunpoint: $150K Reward for Tips

Mail carriers in the Bay Area are increasingly concerned this holiday season after two recent armed robberies targeting postal workers. In response, the United States Postal Service (USPS) is offering a $150,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in each case.

“It’s terrible. It’s horrible,” said Edward Fletcher, president of the East Bay branch of the National Association of Letter Carriers. “No letter carrier should wake up every day wondering if today’s the day they’re going to be robbed.”

The robberies, both occurring in late November, have left postal workers feeling vulnerable. In one incident, a mail carrier in Vallejo was approached by a suspect who held a gun to his face and demanded the mailman’s master mailbox key. Surveillance footage of the Nov. 29 robbery in Antioch shows a woman in a blue jacket pulling out a gun and robbing the letter carrier of the same key.

Postal officials stress the seriousness of these crimes. “It’s a federal crime,” U.S. Postal Inspector Jeff Fitch said. “A potential 25 years in federal prison.”

Fletcher condemned the attacks, noting that some mail carriers who were targeted have become too fearful to return to work. “We’re out there trying to be Santa Claus, delivering packages, and suddenly, out of nowhere, someone sticks a gun in your face,” he added. “This is unacceptable.”
