Americans can claim a share of multi-million-dollar data breach settlements, but time is running out to submit claims.
Tampa General Hospital Settlement
Tampa General Hospital will pay $6.8 million as part of a class action lawsuit stemming from a data breach discovered on or around May 31, 2023. The breach reportedly impacted the personal information of approximately 2.1 million individuals.
Although the hospital has not admitted to any wrongdoing, the lawsuit alleges negligence in protecting patient information.

Eligible Benefits:
- Ordinary Losses: Class members can claim up to $1,500 for documented expenses, including bank fees, communication charges, travel expenses, and credit-related costs.
- Extraordinary Losses: Those with documented losses, such as identity theft or fraudulent charges, may receive up to $7,500.
- Lost Time Compensation: Up to four hours of lost time can be reimbursed at $25 per hour, for a maximum of $100.
- Flat Payment Option: Patients who didn’t experience losses may claim a $125 payment.
- Credit Monitoring: All class members are eligible for one year of free three-bureau credit monitoring services.
The deadline to submit a valid claim form is January 12, 2025. A final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for February 3, 2025.

Lansing Community College Settlement
Lansing Community College has agreed to pay $1.45 million in response to claims it failed to protect sensitive student and employee information during a data breach that occurred between December 25, 2022, and March 15, 2023.
The breach allegedly exposed personal information, including Social Security numbers. Plaintiffs argue that the college could have prevented the breach with reasonable cybersecurity measures.
Eligible Benefits:
- Compensation: Class members who experienced losses can claim up to $2,000 for documented expenses.
- Claim Deadline: Valid claim forms must be submitted by January 20, 2025.
- Final Approval Hearing: Scheduled for January 21, 2025.
Both settlements provide an opportunity for affected individuals to recover losses or obtain compensation. Eligible participants are encouraged to act quickly to secure their benefits.
