Hurry! Final Opportunity for $7,500 Checks from Data Breach Settlement

Hospital patients affected by a major data breach at Tampa General Hospital have just one day left to claim compensation of up to $7,500 as part of a multi-million dollar settlement.

The breach, which compromised the personal information of approximately 2.1 million people, was discovered by the Florida-based hospital in late May 2023. The hospital has agreed to a $6.8 million settlement in response to a class-action lawsuit, though it has not admitted any wrongdoing.

The breach involved the leak of sensitive patient data, including health insurance information, Social Security numbers, medical record numbers, and treatment details. Eligible individuals, who should have already received notification from the Florida Health Science Center about the breach, must act quickly to submit their claims before the January 12 deadline.

What Compensation is Available?

The settlement offers different compensation levels based on the extent of the personal impact from the breach:

  • No Losses: If you received the notice but didn’t experience any financial loss, you can claim a flat payment of $125.
  • Documented Losses: Individuals who incurred travel expenses, credit-related charges, bank fees, or communication costs can receive up to $1,500.
  • Extraordinary Losses: If you experienced identity theft or fraudulent charges due to the breach, you may be eligible for up to $7,500, provided you can supply evidence of the losses (e.g., receipts, bank statements, or credit reports).
  • Lost Time: You can also claim up to $100 for time lost dealing with the breach, at a rate of $25 per hour for up to four hours.
  • Free Credit Monitoring: All affected individuals are entitled to one year of free credit monitoring through a three-bureau service.

Important Deadlines

To receive compensation, claims must be filed by January 12, 2025. Failing to submit a claim by this date could affect your legal rights regarding the settlement.

If you wish to opt out of the settlement and preserve the right to pursue legal action against the hospital, the exclusion deadline was December 28, 2024. Those who missed this deadline will forfeit their ability to take future legal action but will remain eligible for compensation from the settlement.

The final approval hearing for the case is scheduled for February 3, 2025.

Additionally, individuals who received a telemarketing call from an online pharmacy may be eligible for compensation between $600 and $1,500 as part of another ongoing settlement .
