Security Guard Shot at Downtown L.A. Target Remains in Critical Condition, Fiancée Says

Three weeks after being shot while attempting to stop a suspected shoplifter at a Target store in downtown Los Angeles, a security guard remains in critical condition in the ICU. The guard, identified only as Will, continues to fight for his life, according to his fiancée, Lauren.

The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. on December 30, at the Target located in the FigAt7th shopping center. Will, along with another security guard, was trying to prevent a suspected shoplifter from leaving the store when both guards were shot, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.

Will was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, while the other guard was treated for injuries and released in fair condition. A spokesperson for KTLA later clarified that the security personnel involved were from Target, not from the shopping center or its management.

Nearly a month after the tragic incident, Lauren provided an update to KTLA, stating that Will is still in critical condition. Describing him as a “dedicated security guard, loving father, and a talented musician,” she explained that Will was shot multiple times, including a shot through his femoral artery. She credited Will’s survival to the quick actions of first responders and the skillful medical treatment he received.

“Will arrived at the hospital without a pulse and suffered multiple cardiac arrests during surgery. He remains intubated and sedated,” Lauren shared. “His recovery will be long and challenging, and it’s already placing a significant financial strain on us.”

A GoFundMe page has been established to assist the family with medical expenses, rehabilitation, and the costs of temporary housing after they relocated from Las Vegas to be with Will during his recovery. Donations can be made via the campaign’s link.

Following the shooting, police apprehended a suspect, Jabril Andrew Metoyer, after an hourslong standoff on December 31. The 25-year-old was arrested and has since been charged with three counts of attempted murder, four counts of robbery, and one count of attempted robbery, the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office announced on January 3.

If convicted on all charges, Metoyer could face a life sentence in state prison .
