Quilts for California: Providing Connection and Comfort During Hard Times

In the wake of the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, one organization is making a significant impact with a simple yet powerful mission: providing comfort through handmade quilts. Wrap the World with Quilts, founded in 2022 by Gina and Hal Halladay along with Beth Hawkins in Lehi, Utah, has grown from a small local effort into a worldwide movement delivering quilts and hygiene kits to those in need.

What began as a modest initiative to provide quilts for Ukrainian refugees has blossomed into a global effort that has seen nearly 52,000 quilts distributed to victims of natural disasters like wildfires, earthquakes, and other crises.

Gina Halladay, reflecting on the unexpected growth of the project, shared: “We thought we might have a few hundred quilts, but now we’re approaching 52,000. It’s become our calling, and we feel this is what we were meant to do.”

The organization’s current focus is on assisting victims of the Los Angeles wildfires. As they mobilize aid to the affected communities, Gina expressed how rewarding it is to witness the selfless contributions of volunteers: “One of the best parts of running this nonprofit is seeing all the good in people. It gives you a hopeful and positive view of the world.”

The mission of Wrap the World with Quilts is simple: to provide comfort, love, warmth, healing, and human connection to individuals in crisis. Each quilt symbolizes more than just a physical blanket—it represents a tangible expression of care and solidarity, with volunteers stitching together hope one quilt at a time.

The community’s response to the organization’s call for donations has been nothing short of overwhelming. Lehi residents are encouraged to drop off quilts and hygiene kits at local donation boxes, while others can contribute by shipping items directly to the nonprofit.

Wrap the World with Quilts has built a strong reputation for responding quickly to humanitarian crises, with past efforts focused on Ukrainian refugees, earthquake survivors in Turkey and Syria, and fire victims in Maui and Lahaina. The organization partners with groups like Lifting Hands International to ensure the supplies reach those who need them most.

The success of Wrap the World with Quilts lies in its belief in the power of quilting to bring people together and heal. After the Halladays made an initial call for donations, quilts began to arrive daily, so much so that they had to move their operations from their living room to an official office space.

Although the founders brought with them decades of experience in the quilting world, it was their compassion and determination that truly propelled the organization to its current scale. “We didn’t know much about humanitarian aid,” Gina confessed. “But we cared deeply about those who were suffering, and we knew quilters had big hearts and were always ready to give.”

For those looking to support the cause, there are several ways to get involved. The nonprofit is always in need of donations, whether in the form of quilts, hygiene kits, or monetary contributions. The organization keeps supporters updated through its social media account, @wraptheworldwithquilts, which shares current needs and donation opportunities.

As Wrap the World with Quilts continues to expand its efforts, the Halladays remain grateful for the outpouring of generosity they witness daily. “It’s a privilege to see how people come together to make a difference,” Gina said. “Even in tough times, kindness truly has the power to change the world.”

Through every stitch and every act of giving, Wrap the World with Quilts is proving that love, comfort, and human connection are not bound by borders—small acts of kindness have the ability to ripple across the world, offering hope and healing to those who need it most.
