Southern California is set to experience a significant shift in weather this weekend, with rain and cooler temperatures on the horizon.
Meteorologists are predicting that a low-pressure system will move into the region on Saturday, bringing light to moderate rain that could total between a tenth and half an inch in most areas by Sunday. The National Weather Service also notes that local rainfall could reach up to one inch in some parts of the San Gabriel Mountains, where thunderstorms are also a possibility.
Higher elevations will see snow, which could bring much-needed relief to ski resorts that have struggled with limited snowfall this season. Snowfall is expected to range from two to five inches above 5,000 feet, with some areas at the resorts receiving up to 10 inches.

While the rain is welcome, as Southern California has been in need of precipitation, there are concerns about the potential impact on burn areas from the Palisades and Eaton wildfires. Officials are preparing for the possibility of mudslides that could cause further damage to these vulnerable areas.
Mark Pestrella, Director of Los Angeles County Public Works, outlined the agency’s preparations, which include 24/7 storm patrols and ensuring flood control dams and channels are ready for the incoming rain. Concrete barriers, or “K-rails,” are being placed to redirect debris, and sandbags are being distributed to residents and businesses in the affected areas.
“Our goal is to safeguard the public, property, and the environment,” Pestrella said during a press conference.
KTLA meteorologist Henry DiCarlo, however, remains optimistic, stating that while the rain is a welcome change, it may not be enough to cause major disruptions.
“We’re getting some rain, and that’s good news,” DiCarlo said. “It’s not going to be too much, which is ideal to prevent issues in the burn areas.”
