California Lottery Player Shocked to Learn $1,000 Prize Is a Life-Changing Amount

A California man’s attempt to use a lottery scratcher to help pay his rent turned into a life-changing moment when he realized he had won much more than expected.

Jeffry Figueroa, a Los Angeles resident, purchased a Winter Magic Multiplier scratcher for $10 at Koko’s Liquor in the city. Initially, he thought he had won $1,000, which he planned to use for rent, so he headed to the California Lottery office in Santa Fe Springs to claim his prize.

However, when he handed in his ticket, he was told that he had actually won the game’s grand prize: $1 million.

“I was shaking so much I could barely sign the claim form,” Figueroa recalled. “It was so surreal. I still can’t believe it!”

As part of the win, Koko’s Liquor will receive a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Figueroa’s victory is part of a string of lucky wins for Californians in 2025, with five other players claiming $1 million or more from scratcher games so far this year.
