Southern California Mass Shooting: 27-Year-Old Faces Multiple Life Sentences

A 27-year-old man is facing the possibility of multiple life sentences after a mass shooting near MacArthur Park left six people injured, including the suspect himself. The shooting took place on January 22, just after 12:45 a.m., near the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and South Alvarado Street.

Authorities have identified the suspect as Jose Daniel Amaya, who allegedly pulled out a .22 caliber handgun and began firing, wounding four men and one woman. Amaya was also shot during the incident, though it remains unclear who returned fire.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics arrived promptly at the scene, transporting three of the victims in stable condition to the hospital, while the other three, including Amaya, were taken in critical but stable condition.

On Monday, L.A. County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced that Amaya faces five charges of attempted murder, each with enhancements for using a firearm during the commission of the crime and causing significant injury to the victims. With at least two previous felony convictions, Amaya is subject to California’s three strikes law, which could result in multiple life sentences if he is convicted.

“This is a stark reminder of the relentless threat of gun violence in Los Angeles,” District Attorney Hochman stated in a press release. “Today’s filing sends a strong message that those who engage in such violence will face the full force of the law.”

Amaya made his first court appearance today, where prosecutors requested a bond of $8 million.
