Patients affected by a 2023 data breach at Tampa General Hospital have only 24 hours left to file a claim and secure their share of a $6.8 million settlement. The breach, which compromised the personal information of approximately 2.1 million people, led to a class-action lawsuit alleging that the Florida-based hospital failed to safeguard sensitive patient data.
Who Is Eligible?
Individuals impacted by the breach should have received a notice from the Florida Health Science Center, informing them that their personal details, including Social Security numbers, medical records, treatment history, and health insurance information, may have been exposed.
To be part of the settlement, claims must be submitted by January 12, 2025.
Potential Compensation
The amount claimants can receive depends on the extent of the harm suffered due to the breach:
- $125 for individuals who received a notification but did not experience financial losses.
- Up to $1,500 for those who incurred out-of-pocket expenses related to the breach, such as travel costs, bank fees, and credit monitoring expenses.
- Up to $7,500 for individuals who experienced identity theft or fraudulent transactions—claimants in this category must provide supporting documentation, such as receipts, credit reports, or bank statements.
- Lost time reimbursement: Class members can also claim compensation for time spent dealing with the breach, receiving $25 per hour for up to four hours, with a maximum payout of $100.
- One year of free three-bureau credit monitoring for all affected individuals.
