Michael Chavez of Los Angeles County had no idea he’d won a $1.2 million Mega Millions prize until a simple text from his coworker prompted him to check his ticket.
Chavez, who had been more focused on the 2024 presidential race on November 5, was unaware of the lottery drawing results that night. He explained that he woke up in the middle of the night to check the election results, not the Mega Millions draw. After briefly checking the election outcome, he went back to bed, not bothering to look at his lottery ticket.
The big revelation came when a coworker sent him a playful message asking if he wasn’t at work because he’d won the lottery.

“He joked, asking if I wasn’t at work because I had won the million,” Chavez said. “He even congratulated me, but I thought he was just messing with me.”
Curious, Chavez finally checked his ticket, only to be stunned when he saw he’d matched five of the six numbers, securing a $1,214,818 win.
“I couldn’t believe my eyes,” Chavez admitted.
Had it not been for his coworker’s text, Chavez said he may have gone much longer without realizing his win. He purchased the ticket at Lake Liquor in Lakewood, where the store earned a $6,000 bonus for selling the lucky ticket.
Chavez’s story is a reminder that sometimes, good fortune comes with a little help from others.
