Two suspects were arrested following a retail theft that spiraled into a high-speed pursuit and dramatic crash in San Bernardino County on January 25.
At approximately 5:30 p.m., officers with the Upland Police Department (UPD) responded to a report of a theft in progress at the Colonies Crossroads shopping center on Campus Avenue.
Surveillance footage from the store shows a woman riding a motorized shopping cart, placing various products into her cart. As she attempted to exit the store, she was confronted by another woman, likely a store employee, but continued her exit from the premises, abandoning the cart.
Officers quickly located the suspect’s vehicle nearby, near the Campus Avenue Fire Station. According to a post from UPD on X (formerly Twitter), the woman driving briefly pulled over to let a male passenger out of the vehicle, before fleeing the scene. Officers then pursued the vehicle down Campus Avenue, while other officers apprehended the male passenger.

As the pursuit continued, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Aviation Unit assisted in tracking the fleeing suspect. The woman lost control of the vehicle near Campus Avenue and 8th Street, hitting a curb and rolling the car onto its side.
Body camera footage from officers showed them surrounding the overturned vehicle with guns drawn, and a tactical move was made to shatter the windshield and pull the suspect from the car.
Both suspects, who were found to have outstanding warrants with no bail, were taken into custody. The female suspect is expected to face additional charges, including retail theft and evading police.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and anyone with information is encouraged to come forward.
