Gov. Gavin Newsom unveiled a new initiative Tuesday aimed at supporting recovery efforts from the devastating Southern California wildfires. The initiative, called LA Rises, will focus on rebuilding the affected communities, starting with an initial $100 million pledge from Dodgers leadership.
This initiative brings together the resources of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, and the state of California, in partnership with prominent leaders like Dodgers Chairman Mark Walter, business mogul and former basketball star Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and LA28 Chairman Casey Wasserman. These figures will lead the charge, encouraging the private sector and philanthropic organizations to join in the recovery.
In a statement, Newsom emphasized the strength and unity of Los Angeles, saying, “Los Angeles will rise again — stronger, more united, and more resilient than ever. Just as we came together to combat the fires, we will now unite to rebuild. With Mark, Earvin, and Casey’s leadership, we’ll harness the creativity, resources, and expertise of the private sector alongside state, local, and federal efforts.”
The Mark Walter Family Foundation and the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation have already committed $100 million to kickstart the program. LA Rises plans to fund various initiatives that will assist communities most impacted by the fires.

Walter, expressing the urgency of action, stated, “The L.A. fires have wreaked havoc on our neighborhoods. It’s time for those who can make a difference to step up and help rebuild better than before.”
Johnson emphasized the importance of collective action, highlighting the initiative’s inclusive approach. “This is about more than just recovery,” he said. “It’s about making communities stronger, more resilient, and better prepared for the future. We’re uniting resources from across California to ensure every Angeleno, no matter their background, has a chance to rebuild and thrive.”
Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger echoed the support, particularly for vulnerable communities. “This initiative will complement local recovery efforts, especially for marginalized populations, by providing the necessary resources for rebuilding from the ground up,” she said.
Casey Wasserman, impressed with the collective spirit of Angeleno leadership, expressed confidence in the city’s ability to overcome challenges. “Los Angeles is a city defined by its resilience,” he said. “Through LA Rises, we will channel the creativity, resources, and generosity of the private sector to rebuild and lay the foundation for a brighter future.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass welcomed the initiative’s support, stressing that the funding generated by LA Rises would be essential in the city’s recovery process. “The support of Governor Newsom and the LA Rises initiative will be critical in helping us rebuild and develop solutions to support our efforts. Angelenos have shown incredible strength and resilience throughout this challenging time.”
On Thursday, Newsom also signed a package of legislation, allocating $2.5 billion in state relief and recovery funding for the fire-affected areas, with funds made available immediately to support operations, debris removal, logistics, and other crucial recovery needs.
