California Safety Alert: Millions of Vehicles May Be Unfit for the Road

A new report from Carfax reveals a troubling safety issue on California’s roadways: over 6.2 million vehicles in the state have at least one open safety recall, with more than a million of these vehicles having multiple unresolved issues.

This situation is part of a nationwide trend, with Carfax reporting that 58.1 million vehicles across the U.S. have outstanding recalls, marking a 16% increase in just two years. California is at the forefront of this problem, leading the nation in the number of vehicles with open recalls. Los Angeles alone has 3 million vehicles with at least one unresolved recall, while San Francisco and San Diego follow with 1.1 million and 563,000 vehicles, respectively.

Among the most concerning recalls are those related to critical safety features such as airbags, brakes, and seatbelts—components that can be life-threatening if not addressed. For example, the infamous Takata airbag recall alone affects over 700,000 vehicles in California.

Even more alarming, over 1.5 million vehicles in California are dealing with two or more open recalls—second only to Texas. These issues pose significant risks to drivers and passengers, highlighting the urgent need for repairs.

“Owners should not ignore the recalls on their vehicles, especially if they have multiple. Taking care of these repairs can prevent accidents and ultimately save money,” said Paul Nadjarian, General Manager of Carfax Car Care.

Despite the potential danger, many vehicle owners fail to take action. Automakers issue recalls with oversight from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and repairs are typically offered at no cost. However, a large number of vehicle owners neglect to have the issues addressed.

Both Carfax and NHTSA have been working to raise awareness and encourage timely action. Drivers can easily check for open recalls on their vehicles by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA website or visiting carfax.com/recall.
