California Independence: Is the State Moving Toward Becoming Its Own Country?

A proposal aimed at making California an independent nation has moved one step closer to becoming a reality. The initiative, led by Fresno activist Marcus Evans, has been approved by the California Secretary of State’s Office to proceed. The initiative asks voters if they believe the state should pursue secession and establish itself as a separate country.

To secure a spot on California’s 2028 ballot, the initiative must gather over 545,000 signatures from registered voters by July 22. If it passes, the measure would not immediately result in California’s independence, but would instead establish a 20-member commission tasked with exploring whether the state could function as a sovereign nation.

However, secession would not happen overnight. A constitutional amendment would be required to formally dissolve California’s ties with the U.S., a process that would necessitate approval from two-thirds of the other states.

The initiative is framed as a “vote of no confidence in the United States of America,” though it would not change California’s current government or its relationship with the federal government in the short term. Notably, California’s constitution currently states in Section 1 of Article III that the state is “an inseparable part of the United States of America.”

Recent polling by the Independent California Institute claims that over 60% of Californians believe the state would be better off if it peacefully seceded from the U.S. within the next decade. The proposal also calls for the removal of the U.S. flag from state buildings as a symbolic gesture of California’s move toward independence.

As the push for California’s secession continues, the state’s voters will have a significant decision to make in the coming years.
