Americans affected by a recent data breach have only a few weeks left to file claims and receive compensation, with some eligible for up to $5,000 in payouts.
The settlement stems from a class-action lawsuit against Mulkay Cardiology Consultants, a medical practice based in New Jersey, which faced a cyberattack in September 2023. The breach, caused by ransomware, compromised the personal health data of nearly 80,000 patients.
While Mulkay denies any wrongdoing, the settlement will provide compensation to those whose sensitive data, including health insurance details and Social Security numbers, was exposed. The breach occurred between September 1 and September 5, 2023.
The lawsuit alleges that Mulkay failed to implement proper security measures to prevent such an incident. As a result, affected individuals are entitled to claim reimbursement for costs directly related to the breach. These can include bank fees, communication charges, travel expenses, and any credit-related costs.

Additionally, claimants may receive compensation for lost time—up to three hours, with a payout of $25 per hour. Ordinary claimants can receive a maximum of $500, while those who experienced significant losses may claim up to $5,000.
Alternatively, class members can opt for a one-time payment of $48 instead of the detailed reimbursement.
Furthermore, all claimants will receive two years of complimentary credit monitoring services. To help prevent future breaches, Mulkay Cardiology has also committed to improving its cybersecurity measures.
To participate in the settlement, individuals must submit a claim form by February 22, 2025. The settlement’s final approval hearing is scheduled for April 11, 2025.
