Governor Gavin Newsom has taken further action to protect survivors of the recent Los Angeles firestorm by extending price gouging protections. His executive orders, issued in January, target unscrupulous price hikes on housing, construction materials, and essential services, ensuring that those affected by the disaster aren’t exploited during their recovery.

The California Department of Justice (DOJ) has already made headway in holding offenders accountable, charging two real estate agents for attempting to take advantage of evacuees from the Eaton Fire. In addition, over 650 warning letters have been issued to hotels and landlords suspected of inflating prices. Those found guilty of violating these protections could face fines up to $10,000 and possible jail time.
Attorney General Rob Bonta has urged the public to report any instances of price gouging by visiting oag.ca.gov/report or calling (800) 952-5225. More information on available resources can be found at CA.gov/LAfires.
