Orange County Pier Shooting: Man Killed by Officers Linked to Earlier Murder

A man suspected of murder was shot and killed by police early Saturday morning after a high-speed chase ended on a popular pier in Orange County.

The incident began around 2:43 a.m. when Menifee police responded to reports of gunfire in the 25000 block of Mesa Edge Court. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of 38-year-old Storm Wolf, a Temecula resident, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators identified Jose Velasquez, 45, of Menifee, as the suspect in Wolf’s killing. Authorities described him as an “acquaintance” of the victim. Velasquez had already fled the area before police arrived.

As the search for Velasquez intensified, law enforcement learned he was possibly heading toward Santa Ana. Officers from the Santa Ana Police Department located his vehicle, which led to a pursuit.

The chase continued into Newport Beach around 6:50 a.m., prompting involvement from Newport Beach police. It ultimately ended at the Newport Pier, where an unknown number of officers fired at Velasquez, killing him.

Footage captured by Instagram user @raythelover, obtained by KTLA, showed Velasquez’s gray SUV speeding down the pier, narrowly missing pedestrians as multiple police vehicles followed. More than a dozen gunshots rang out in the video.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether Velasquez fired at officers or who initiated the gunfire. No officers or bystanders were injured in the incident. Police also did not disclose the specific location where the homicide took place.
