Dana Point DUI Crash Turns Deadly: One Killed, One Injured, Suspect Arrested

Authorities have arrested a Dana Point woman suspected of driving under the influence in a fatal head-on collision that claimed the life of an 88-year-old man, officials announced Saturday.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to the crash at Golden Lantern Street and Stonehill Drive around 6:15 p.m. on Friday.

Investigators determined that Serene Francie Rosenberg, 48, was driving a Land Rover SUV westbound on Stonehill Drive when she allegedly made a left turn against a red arrow, cutting in front of an oncoming Ford Transit van. The two vehicles collided head-on.

Melvin Joseph Weibel, 88, a passenger in the Transit van, was pronounced dead at the scene due to the impact of the crash. The van’s driver sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

Deputies arrested Rosenberg on suspicion of DUI causing injury and murder due to her three prior DUI convictions. She was booked into the Orange County Jail.

The Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is conducting an investigation, and authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s Traffic Bureau at 949-425-1860.
