Madison Police Probe How 15-Year-Old Girl Got Gun Used in Deadly School Shooting

A pre-Christmas tragedy unfolded at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, when a 15-year-old student, Natalie Rupnow, opened fire inside the school, killing two individuals and injuring six others. The shooting sent shockwaves through the community, leaving many stunned and searching for answers. Investigators are focused on understanding how Rupnow obtained the gun and what motivated her actions.

Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes stated that the shooting appears to be the result of multiple factors, but he declined to elaborate further on the motive. Investigators are exploring whether the shooter’s parents owned the weapon and are working with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to trace the gun’s origin. Barnes emphasized that the investigation would take time to answer key questions, including the shooter’s intent and whether she had a manifesto or online posts linked to the attack.

The shooting occurred just before 11 a.m. on Monday, as students were preparing for the last week of school before the Christmas break. Rupnow, who also went by the name Samantha, was reportedly in a study hall when she pulled out a handgun and opened fire. She killed a student and a teacher, both of whom have not yet been identified, while six others were hospitalized with injuries. Two students are in critical condition, while the others are in stable condition or have been released from the hospital.

The shooting has left survivors, some as young as 7 or 8, deeply traumatized. Students have spoken of their fear and sadness as they witnessed the chaos. Parents have also expressed their concern, acknowledging the long-term impact this event will have on the children and the community. Mireille Jean-Charles, a mother of three students at the school, said that while her children were safe, the trauma of the incident would affect them for a long time.

The police chief assured the public that officers are sensitive to the children’s trauma and would not pressure them for information before they are ready to speak. Investigators are also examining the shooter’s personal effects, including her computer and cell phone, in hopes of uncovering more details about the incident.

In the wake of the shooting, the United Way of Dane County established the Abundant Life Christian School Emergency and Recovery Fund to support the affected families and educators. The school, meanwhile, is focused on helping students cope with the tragedy.

Recent drills and training may have helped prevent a larger disaster. Medics from the police department had been practicing mass trauma response just three miles from the school when the shooting occurred. As soon as the incident was reported, the medics rushed to the scene and provided immediate care to the injured. Students at the school had also been trained in active shooter drills, which helped them respond appropriately to the situation. Many students took shelter in classrooms, while teachers did what they could to protect them, including standing guard at classroom doors with scissors.

Madison police also searched the shooter’s home and are seeking additional search warrants. While the shooter’s parents have not been charged with any crimes, questions remain about their potential involvement in the incident. According to police, they have no reason to believe the parents committed any crimes related to the shooting, but the investigation continues.

The tragedy marks the 83rd school shooting in the U.S. this year, surpassing the previous record for school shootings in a single year. In light of the event, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers ordered flags at federal installations and facilities to be lowered to half-staff in honor of the victims. A candlelight vigil was scheduled to take place, with local officials and education representatives expected to attend.

This shooting is part of a disturbing trend of gun violence at schools across the nation. Earlier this year, shootings at schools in Georgia, Tennessee, and California shocked the nation. The tragedy at Abundant Life Christian School underscores the ongoing issue of gun violence in schools and the urgent need for further efforts to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
