Even though the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu reopened on Sunday, access to the Palisades area remains restricted, leaving many drivers puzzled. Checkpoints have been established at neighborhood entrances in the Pacific Palisades, where IDs are required. This measure is designed to allow residents affected by the recent fire to return to their homes without unwanted onlookers, preventing issues such as looting, squatting, or curious visitors merely seeking to witness the aftermath.
For many locals, the decision has been a welcome relief. “I’m glad they decided to keep the area closed,” said Laura Diamond, a resident who lost her home in Pacific Palisades, during an interview with KTLA’s Rachel Menitoff. “It’s my first time back, and to think of people from outside driving by to see what’s an incredibly emotional experience—it would be very hard to handle.”

Caltrans updated the public on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday afternoon, noting that lane closures persist and significant delays should be expected in the Pacific Palisades. According to their update, the section of the PCH between Coastline Drive and Entrada Drive remains off-limits to the public. Additionally, there is an active work zone between Carbon Beach Terrace and Coastline Drive, with only one lane open in each direction.
Some local agencies and even the Mayor of Malibu have voiced criticism, describing the last-minute changes to the access plan as uncoordinated and disruptive. In contrast, Mayor Karen Bass emphasized that the situation remains fluid and explained that the continued use of checkpoints and restricted access was a decision made after Governor Newsom committed additional state resources.
Starting Monday, control of these checkpoints will be transferred from the Los Angeles Police Department to the California Highway Patrol and the National Guard, allowing LAPD to focus on other city-wide emergencies.
