A 44-year-old inmate was found unresponsive in his cell at a Santa Ana intake center on Saturday morning, and officials have confirmed that he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man had been arrested on July 9, 2024, by the Newport Beach Police Department on charges of driving under the influence and violating probation, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. On February 1, deputies discovered the inmate in Module J of the Intake Release Center, where he was unresponsive.

Officials stated that his name is being withheld until next of kin can be notified, as per protocol by the Orange County Coroner’s Division. Despite prompt efforts by deputies, correctional medical personnel, and crews from the Orange County Fire Authority to resuscitate him, the man was declared dead at 8:54 a.m.
In a press release, the sheriff’s department noted that, at this preliminary stage, there appear to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. A definitive cause of death will be established after toxicology screenings and an independent autopsy are completed.
The investigation into the inmate’s death is ongoing. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office will look into the matter further, while the sheriff’s department will carry out an in-custody death review. Additional details have not been released at this time.
