Many dream of hitting the jackpot, but picking the right numbers is often just a guessing game. While some people rely on birthdays, anniversaries, or so-called “lucky” numbers, a new study suggests that certain numbers might actually appear more frequently in lottery draws.
Numbers That Hit the Jackpot Most Often
A study by Play USA examined the frequency of numbers drawn across popular lottery games, including Powerball, Mega Millions, The Big Game, Hot Lotto, and Lucky for Life. The research revealed which numbers historically show up the most—potentially increasing your chances of winning big.
The number 39 ranked as the luckiest, appearing an average of 209.4 times across all five games. It’s been drawn 347 times in Powerball alone, making it the most common number in that game.
Following close behind is 28, which has a frequency of 200.6. It has been drawn 331 times in Powerball and 270 times in Lucky for Life, making it a solid pick.
Other frequently drawn numbers include:
- 16 – With an average frequency of 207.2, it was the most commonly drawn number in Hot Lotto (228 times).
- 32 – It holds an average frequency of 207.2, making it one of the most frequent numbers in both Powerball and Hot Lotto.
- 15 – This number has been pulled 262 times in Lucky for Life and is among the top six numbers in Hot Lotto.
Numbers That Rarely Show Up
While some numbers are drawn more often, others seem to be far less lucky.
The study found that 47 is the least frequently drawn number, with an average appearance rate of only 145.8. It’s the least common number in both Powerball and Mega Millions, appearing just 251 times and 163 times, respectively.
Other numbers to avoid include:
- 46 – With an average frequency of 148.6, it is one of the least common in Hot Lotto, appearing only 39 times.
- 43, 41, and 44 – These numbers ranked among the lowest in lottery frequency, making them statistically less favorable choices.

Does Strategy Matter?
Lottery expert Alexander Korsager weighed in on why certain numbers might be drawn more often—or at least why people perceive them as lucky or unlucky.
“Most players pick significant dates, such as birthdays, which limits their choices to numbers 1 through 31,” he explained. “That leaves numbers in the 40s and 50s underrepresented, simply because fewer people choose them.”
While some players analyze past results for trends, Korsager warns against relying too much on previous winning numbers.
“Each draw is completely random, and past results do not influence future outcomes,” he said. “This is known as the ‘gambler’s fallacy’—the mistaken belief that past events change the likelihood of future ones.”
The Only Way to Improve Your Odds
Despite all the data, the reality is that no number is guaranteed to win. However, Korsager shared one way to slightly boost your chances:
“The only real way to increase your odds is to buy more tickets,” he said. “Joining a lottery pool allows you to purchase more tickets without spending a fortune, though you’ll have to share the winnings if you win.”
While playing the lottery can be fun, it’s important to gamble responsibly. Set limits, never bet more than you can afford to lose, and avoid chasing losses.
