LA Arson Suspect Taken Down on Camera: ‘Wrong Neighborhood, Buddy’

A group of vigilant Los Angeles residents took decisive action after witnessing a man allegedly attempting to ignite a fire in their neighborhood. The incident, which occurred in Chatsworth, a community in northwest Los Angeles, led to a dramatic citizen’s arrest as residents, still reeling from past wildfires, moved swiftly to prevent a potential disaster.

Residents Chase Down Suspect

The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Alejandro Martinez, is now facing an arson charge, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Video footage shared by journalist Gabe Cortez captured the moment Martinez was seen fleeing down a residential street as locals pursued him in vehicles before tackling him to the ground.

Authorities responded shortly after the citizens had detained Martinez, securing the area and conducting a search. Upon inspecting his belongings, deputies discovered a lighter, a small amount of cash, and a car battery jumper kit.

In the footage, Martinez could be heard protesting his innocence in Spanish, stating, “No he robado nada, en serio,” which translates to “I haven’t stolen anything, seriously.”

Suspicious Behavior Raises Alarms

Brandon Taylor, a photographer with Traffic News LA, was present in the area to capture images following reports of a brush fire nearby. He recounted seeing Martinez behaving strangely in the bushes near the fire’s location, which immediately raised red flags.

“It just seemed odd that someone was in the bushes so soon after a fire had been reported about a quarter-mile up the road,” Taylor told FOX 11 Los Angeles. His observations led concerned neighbors to confront the suspect, leading to his eventual capture.

Fear of Wildfire Fuels Residents’ Actions

Residents of Chatsworth, like many in California, have experienced the devastating effects of wildfires firsthand. The Woolsey Fire, which ravaged the region in 2018, started less than a mile away from where this incident took place.

Many locals are still recovering from previous fire-related losses and were deeply concerned about the potential destruction another wildfire could cause.

“The people here were absolutely furious,” Taylor explained. “They know what it’s like to lose everything. With the dry conditions and past disasters in mind, they weren’t willing to take any risks.”

Authorities Continue Investigation

Law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation into the incident and are urging anyone with further details to come forward.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department remains committed to preventing wildfire-related crimes and encourages residents to stay alert and report any suspicious activity.

Chatsworth, located about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, is known for its dry, rugged terrain—conditions that make it highly susceptible to fast-spreading wildfires.

Authorities have yet to release additional details on the case, but Fox News Digital has reached out to the LA County Sheriff’s Department for further comment.
