More than 800 cases of Aleppo Tahini Paste have been recalled over potential salmonella contamination, according to an announcement from Turkana Food Inc. on Thursday. The product was distributed across 19 states, raising concerns about food safety.
Why It’s Important
Salmonella infections can lead to severe illness, particularly in young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms range from gastrointestinal distress to more severe complications such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
Key Details
Turkana, a New Jersey-based food distributor, has voluntarily recalled 858 cases of its 16-ounce Aleppo Tahini Paste due to possible salmonella contamination. The lot number affected is 120824-01, with an expiration date of August 2026.
The recall was triggered after routine sampling by the Ohio Department of Agriculture detected salmonella in the product. So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled tahini.

Understanding Salmonella Risks
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), salmonella infections are among the most common foodborne illnesses in the U.S., causing approximately 1.35 million cases annually.
Common symptoms of salmonella infection include:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea (which may be bloody)
- Abdominal cramps
- Fever
More severe cases may lead to complications such as muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract infections.
Regulatory Response
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversees voluntary recalls like this one, working with companies to assess risks and inform the public. The agency states that most food recalls are initiated by manufacturers as a precautionary measure.
What Consumers Should Do
Anyone who has purchased the affected Aleppo Tahini Paste should avoid consuming it and return the product to the store for a full refund. Consumers with questions can contact Turkana Food Inc. for further assistance.
