While the U.S. is home to many welcoming and friendly cities, some places have gained a reputation for less-than-cordial behavior. Whether it’s the fast-paced lifestyle, perceived standoffishness, or disregard for social etiquette, certain cities stand out for their lack of politeness.
A recent survey by Preply examined social habits that contribute to a city’s rudeness ranking. Factors such as inattentiveness in public, excessive noise in shared spaces, and impolite behavior toward service workers were among the most common complaints from residents.
The Rudest Cities in California
Among California cities, Oakland was ranked the rudest in the state, landing at No. 5 on the national list. Other cities in the Golden State also made the cut, including Long Beach (9), San Francisco (14), Sacramento (19), Los Angeles (25), and San Jose (39).

Where Does Your City Rank?
According to Preply’s findings, the five rudest cities in the U.S. are:
- Miami, Florida
- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
- Tampa, Florida
- Louisville, Kentucky
- Oakland, California
Interestingly, some states—including Idaho, Montana, and Iowa—did not have any cities ranked among the rudest.
How Was This Data Collected?
The rankings were determined through a survey where residents provided insights into the social behaviors they observed in their cities. Preply then calculated a “city rudeness score” based on these responses.
