According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, the inmate had been in custody at the Theo Lacy Facility, a maximum-security jail, since March 9, 2019. Officials have not yet released his name, as they are waiting to notify his next of kin.

The individual was initially arrested by Westminster Police on multiple charges, including attempted murder, arson of an inhabited dwelling, arson resulting in great bodily injury, and aggravated arson with a prior offense.

After spending over three years in custody, medical staff determined that he required advanced care, leading to his transfer to a hospital on September 9, 2022. The inmate remained hospitalized for an extended period before being pronounced dead at approximately 9:17 a.m. on February 9, 2025.

The sheriff’s department stated that there were no immediate signs of suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. However, an independent autopsy and toxicology report will ultimately determine the official cause.

As per protocol, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an investigation into the in-custody death, while the sheriff’s department will perform its own internal review.

No further details were available as of Monday afternoon.
