Why John Legend Might Say Goodbye to California for Good

The recent wave of devastating wildfires in Southern California has left John Legend and Chrissy Teigen questioning whether they should remain in the state or relocate to the East Coast.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Legend shared that the family has been contemplating a return to New York after experiencing what he described as the “collective trauma” of the fires that tore through the region last month.

The singer recalled returning from vacation with his family on Jan. 7, only to be met with a frightening sight—raging flames and thick smoke from the Palisades Fire. Just a day later, the Sunset Fire erupted in the Hollywood Hills, spreading rapidly and heightening their concerns.

“The danger felt too close for comfort,” Legend admitted.

As a precaution, the couple gathered their four children, four dogs, and even their pet bearded dragon and headed south to a hotel in Carlsbad. They remained there for nearly a week before returning home, relieved that their property had been spared, though aware that many others were not as fortunate.

Legend noted that the fires deeply affected his children and reinforced the unpredictability of living in California.

“Chrissy and I have often talked about going back to New York, where we lived before,” he said. “We’ll likely make the move when our youngest kids are a little older.”

The couple’s younger children, Esti and Wren, are both one year old, while their older daughter Luna is 8 and son Miles is 6.

For now, they remain in Beverly Hills, where they have lived since 2020. However, they once owned two penthouses in Manhattan’s Nolita neighborhood, which they sold for $18 million in 2022. Initially, they had plans to merge the two apartments into a single, expansive home but never went through with it.

Legend previously acknowledged that staying in Los Angeles made sense given their work commitments but admitted he still longs for New York.

“I miss it all the time,” he said. “No matter where I live, New York will always be my favorite city.”
