A 30-year-old man lost his life after driving the wrong way on the San Diego (405) Freeway in Sherman Oaks, colliding head-on with another vehicle. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the driver as Eduardo Membrano on Wednesday.
Authorities say Membrano was first reported traveling northbound in the southbound carpool lane near the Getty Center before the fatal crash.
The collision, which occurred around 4:06 a.m. on Tuesday near the Valley Vista Boulevard exit, involved multiple vehicles and left two other people injured, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Membrano did not survive the impact and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver he struck suffered serious injuries, including multiple broken bones, and was transported to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Despite his condition, he remained conscious and was able to communicate with emergency responders.
A third individual was assessed by paramedics at the scene but declined further medical treatment, according to Mark McLean of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The crash forced an extended closure of several lanes on the freeway, leading to major traffic delays during the busy morning commute. CHP is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
