Gas Prices in California Rapidly Approaching $5 Per Gallon

Gas prices in California have seen a sharp increase in recent weeks, with the statewide average nearing $5 per gallon.

Current Gas Prices in California

According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in California reached $4.84 on Saturday, marking a 25-cent jump from last week and an increase of 44 cents compared to a month ago.

Several factors are contributing to the price surge, including refinery maintenance, a temporary refinery shutdown in Northern California, and the annual transition to summer fuel blends.

Even compared to last year, prices are noticeably higher. On Feb. 15, 2024, California’s average was $4.64 per gallon19 cents lower than today’s rate.

Meanwhile, the national average has also risen, but by a more modest 8 cents over the past month.

Policy and Market Impact on Gas Prices

In an effort to reduce carbon emissions, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) approved a measure last year to lower the carbon intensity in fuels. While aimed at reducing the state’s reliance on fossil fuels, CARB warned at the time that this change would likely lead to higher gas prices.

Now, with a mix of policy changes, seasonal fuel adjustments, and supply issues, drivers in California are feeling the impact at the pump.

Gas Prices by Metro Area

Gas prices vary across different regions in the state. Here’s a look at the latest AAA-reported averages:

  • Los Angeles-Long Beach – $4.77
  • Bakersfield – $4.65
  • Orange County – $4.75
  • Riverside – $4.66
  • San Bernardino – $4.66
  • Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Lompoc – $4.74
  • Ventura – $4.78

California Leads the Nation in Gas Prices

At $4.84 per gallon, California currently has the highest gas prices in the country, a distinction it frequently competes for with Hawaii.

With summer blends and ongoing refinery challenges, prices could continue to rise in the coming weeks.
