A missing boater and their dog were rescued off the coast of Catalina Island on Saturday evening by the U.S. Coast Guard.
The rescue operation began after a good Samaritan made a distress call around 8 p.m., reporting that a friend and their dog were missing. The pair had last been seen four to five hours earlier, and it was believed they had fallen asleep on their boat.
While the missing boaters were unable to communicate directly with the Coast Guard, they managed to relay the distress signal through TowBoatUS Ventura, a marine assistance service.

Coast Guard personnel from Station Los Angeles coordinated the search and rescue, supported by an air crew from Coast Guard Sector San Diego. The air crew was the first to locate the boaters, who were found in a dinghy about 18 miles east of Avalon.
Officials confirmed that the boater was experiencing mild hypothermia but did not have any serious medical issues.
Local agency BayWatch Cabrillo assisted with the rescue, transporting the boater to shore where paramedics provided treatment. The condition of the dog was not immediately available.
