7-Year Sentence for California Woman Caught Smuggling Heroin in Bibles

A California woman was sentenced to seven years in prison on Friday after being caught with heroin hidden inside Bibles that were addressed to inmates in state prisons.

Lucresia Stone-Rojas, 46, was initially arrested on November 12, 2023, when a license plate reader flagged a stolen Porsche in El Cajon. During a traffic stop, authorities discovered a loaded 9mm Walther handgun and ammunition. Because of her previous felony convictions, she faced federal charges for illegal possession of a firearm, though she was not charged for the stolen vehicle.

On December 27, 2023, Stone-Rojas was arrested again after federal investigators uncovered packages addressed to inmates in California state prisons. A search revealed that two Bibles contained 23 grams of heroin concealed in their spines, intended for delivery to the prisons.

“This case highlights the dangers of smuggling drugs into our prisons, which threatens the safety of both inmates and correctional officers,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Andrew Haden. “This is a stark reminder of the lengths some will go to exploit faith and rehabilitation for the continuation of illegal activities. Such actions will not be tolerated.”
