How California Residents Can File Taxes for Free Before April 15

LOS ANGELES – As the April 15 tax filing deadline nears, California residents have multiple free tax filing options based on income, location, and filing status.

IRS Free File & Direct Filing

The IRS Free File program collaborates with various tax service providers to offer free federal returns for individuals with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $84,000 or less. Some participating companies also provide free state tax filing services.

Additionally, IRS Direct File allows taxpayers in California and 24 other states to file their federal returns directly with the IRS. This method is ideal for employees receiving W-2 forms, retirees, and those with Social Security income. However, it does not support filings for gig workers or business owners.

Free Software and In-Person Assistance

Tax preparation companies like TurboTax, H&R Block, and Cash App Taxes offer free filing options for simple tax situations. For those in need of personalized help, the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free in-person support for eligible individuals.

These services provide an accessible way for many Californians to meet the April 15 deadline without paying for professional tax services.
