Former NFL Player Arrested During Protest at California City Council Meeting

Former Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe was taken into custody at a Huntington Beach City Council meeting on Tuesday following a passionate speech opposing a commemorative plaque set to be installed at the city’s Central Library.

Kluwe, who spent eight seasons in the NFL, criticized the design of the plaque, which marks the library’s 50th anniversary but has drawn controversy for featuring the acronym “MAGA.” The phrase, widely associated with Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan, has sparked division among local residents.

A Defiant Stand

During his address, Kluwe condemned the inclusion of “MAGA,” calling it a symbol of corruption and anti-democratic ideals. Declaring his intent to partake in peaceful civil disobedience, he approached the council dais with his hands positioned behind his back, signaling his readiness for arrest.

Four police officers escorted Kluwe out of the chambers, though officials did not immediately disclose what charges, if any, he would face.

A History of Advocacy

Kluwe, a longtime Huntington Beach resident and former standout at UCLA and Los Alamitos High School, has been an outspoken advocate on social issues since retiring from professional football in 2013. He has championed LGBTQ+ rights and has been a vocal critic of the NFL’s handling of political and social controversies.

Community Divided Over Plaque

The library plaque has been a contentious issue in Huntington Beach, with many residents arguing that its design politicizes what should be a neutral celebration of the library’s milestone. Despite the backlash, the city council voted unanimously to approve the plaque’s installation.
