A student council is a group of students who have been chosen by the students. Each member plays a specific role on the council. Their jobs are to represent the interests, wants, and needs of the student body. There are 23 members, and two co-sponsors, Makenzie Logan and Rachel Shutte.

“I am one of the co-sponsors. We run the meetings, help plan and carry out events, market our events, delegate responsibilities to our members, and manage our purchases,” Logan said.

However due to COVID-19, the student council has had to cancel or replan their events. They were not able to plan their Halloween party or have a proper homecoming this year. The spring blood drive may also be cancelled.

“It’s fun; you get to do a lot of things for the school and in your community, they are the backbone of most activities and events at Bellevue East,” 11th grade student council member Amelia Belew said.

However despite COVID, Logan hopes to do a clothing drive for the community and another holiday spirit week in December, where students will get to compete for “best dressed” daily by posting their photo on student council’s Instagram page to win a prize.

In the student council there are 3 committees; there’s the Community-based, School-based, and STUCO-based committees. Community-based focuses on what is needed in the community/school, School-based is concentrated on the students, along with creating and planning events and incorporating the student’s needs/wants. STUCO-based is what they as a group want to accomplish.

“I am on the student based committee and I basically work with and listen to the students and what they want,” sophomore Viktoriya Kucinsky said.
