Walmart customers are voicing their frustration over the retailer’s latest security measures, with some claiming they have waited over 30 minutes to access basic items.
In an effort to combat retail theft, the company has been locking more products behind glass cases and implementing additional security tags. Fragrances are the latest items to be placed under lock and key, requiring shoppers to wait for an employee to unlock the display.
Long Waits for Locked Items
While high-end beauty retailers like Sephora have long secured their perfumes due to theft concerns, Walmart shoppers are growing impatient with the new policy. One customer took to social media to complain about the lengthy wait, saying they had been pushing the assistance button for over 30 minutes without any response.
Security measures are expanding beyond high-value items—everyday products such as toothpaste and even cheese have been wrapped in protective netting or fitted with security tags.

Checkout Chaos Frustrates Customers
Walmart’s checkout process is also under fire, with customers facing long lines due to a shift in store policies. In recent months, Walmart replaced many traditional cashier stations with self-checkout lanes, but in some locations, self-checkouts have since been restricted or closed entirely.
Reports suggest that stores are shutting down self-checkout lanes when there aren’t enough employees to monitor them, leaving customers waiting in long lines to pay. One shopper complained online, saying their Walmart had replaced half of its registers with self-checkout machines, only to close many of them later, forcing customers into longer waits.
Additionally, some stores have limited checkout lanes to customers with 15 items or fewer, leaving those with larger purchases with few options. Shoppers have voiced their anger on social media, with some threatening to take their business elsewhere due to the inconvenience.
Retailers Crack Down on Theft
The surge in theft over recent years has prompted major retailers, including Walmart, to implement stricter security measures. Locked cabinets, increased surveillance, and receipt checks have become common, but many shoppers feel the added security is making their shopping experience unnecessarily frustrating.
With customers waiting extended periods for locked items and facing long checkout lines, Walmart continues to face criticism over its handling of theft prevention versus customer convenience .
