Authorities in Pomona have arrested two gang members accused of extorting and kidnapping a local business owner in a months-long scheme.
The suspects, identified as 24-year-old Alexis Hernandez and 36-year-old Gustavo Maldonado, are both residents of Pomona.
The investigation began on Jan. 13 after a business owner came forward to report that gang members had been demanding money from them in exchange for “protection.” The victim claimed the suspects had threatened their family and business if they refused to pay.
According to police, the extortion scheme had been ongoing for several months, with the suspects allegedly collecting hundreds of dollars per month. In one disturbing incident, the suspects reportedly forced one of the business’s employees into a car and ordered them to withdraw a large amount of cash from an ATM.

The situation escalated on Jan. 31 when officers responded to reports of a victim being threatened in the 1000 block of E. Third Street. Upon arrival, authorities observed Hernandez and Maldonado attempting to enter the business.
After questioning the pair, police determined they had been making threats and stealing from the establishment. Both suspects were taken into custody and booked at Pomona City Jail.
On Feb. 4, prosecutors with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed 14 charges against Hernandez and Maldonado, including criminal street gang conspiracy, kidnapping, and extortion.
