A recent analysis of eBay sales has unveiled the most expensive gold and silver coins that changed hands on the platform, with some fetching nearly $60,000.
The study, conducted by SD Bullion, examined transactions from November 2024 to January 2025, revealing strong demand for collectible and bullion coins.
Gold Coins Fetch Top Dollar
Among the highest-priced gold coins sold on eBay was a tube of 20 American Gold Eagle $50 coins from 2024, which reached an impressive $59,624. These coins are highly sought after for their gold content and iconic design, featuring Lady Liberty on the obverse and a family of eagles on the reverse.
A similar tube of 20 one-ounce Gold American Eagles from 2025 was the second-most expensive gold listing, selling for $58,706. Collectors often seek out newly minted coins due to their potential appreciation in value.
Another tube of 20 American Gold Eagles from mixed years also sold for a significant $58,616, proving that even older coins retain strong demand.
Numismatic expert Greg Bennick noted that while gold coins are an attractive investment, buyers should be cautious about paying more than their intrinsic metal value due to speculation on future rarity.
Silver Coins Also Command High Prices
Silver coins also saw impressive sales, with the top silver listing being a bulk bag of 4,000 90% Silver Washington Quarters, selling for $23,271. Despite their $1,000 face value, the real draw was the silver content—totaling approximately 723 troy ounces.

A bag of 2,000 90% Silver Kennedy Half Dollars, minted in 1964, fetched $23,179. Each coin contains 0.3617 troy ounces of silver, making the collection valuable for both investors and collectors.
The third-highest silver listing was a bag of 10,000 90% Silver Dimes, which sold for $23,103. These dimes, a mix of Mercury and Roosevelt designs, totaled around 715 ounces of silver.
Bennick explained that during economic uncertainty, tangible assets like precious metals tend to see increased demand, making bulk silver coins a popular choice for investors.
Coin Collecting: A Growing Hobby
While once considered a niche interest among the wealthy, coin collecting has evolved into a mainstream hobby. Rare coins can command staggering prices, with some selling for hundreds of thousands—or even millions—through auction houses and online marketplaces.
For those new to numismatics, experts recommend researching rarity, condition, and market trends before making a purchase. Even a common Lincoln Wheat Penny could be worth a small fortune, with some rare variations valued as high as $840,000 .
