Deadly Crash in L.A. County After Canceled Pursuit of Reckless Driver

A police chase that began in Bell Gardens ended in a fatal crash after authorities discontinued the pursuit, according to officials.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that officers attempted to pull over a vehicle near Florence Avenue around 11:13 p.m. on Saturday night. When the driver failed to comply, officers initiated a pursuit. However, due to the suspect’s reckless driving—speeding through red lights at a dangerous velocity—CHP quickly made the decision to halt the chase.

Moments after officers disengaged, the vehicle crashed near the intersection of Randolph Street and Eastern Avenue. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and confirmed that one person inside the vehicle had died. At least one other occupant was transported to the hospital with injuries of unknown severity.

Devastating Aftermath

Footage from the scene captured by KTLA showed debris scattered across the roadway, with the suspect’s white sedan heavily damaged from the impact. Witnesses described the chaotic moments following the crash.

Arturo Esquivel, a bystander, recalled hearing the sound of a speeding car moments before the collision. “They hit another vehicle and struck some pedestrians,” Esquivel said. “At first, I thought I saw clothes flying out of the car, but then I realized it was a person.”

According to Esquivel, the pedestrian collided with a bus stop pole and died at the scene. However, CHP has not yet confirmed whether the deceased individual was a pedestrian or a vehicle occupant.

Suspects in Custody

Authorities detained three individuals from the suspect vehicle. One of them reportedly attempted to flee on foot after being taken into custody, though it remains unclear whether they were apprehended again.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has taken over the investigation as officials work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the deadly crash .
