Tyler Ebell, a former football star turned sheriff’s deputy, has lost his ability to serve as a law enforcement officer in California, according to reports from the Los Angeles Times.
Ebell, who made a name for himself as a standout running back at Ventura High School and UCLA, formally surrendered his law enforcement certification to the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. The decision comes more than two years after his termination from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO) in 2022.
Why Ebell Can No Longer Serve as an Officer
Without this certification, Ebell is barred from working as a sworn officer in California and may struggle to find employment in law enforcement elsewhere.

According to the Ventura County Star, his firing stemmed from an internal affairs investigation that found he had committed serious misconduct and violated the core ethical standards expected of law enforcement officers.
The Investigation and His Dismissal
Authorities began investigating Ebell in late 2021 after off-duty deputies spotted him at a restaurant with a former inmate—someone he had interacted with while working at the jail. The inquiry revealed that Ebell had engaged in an improper relationship with the inmate while still employed at the facility.
In response to the findings, Ebell acknowledged making poor decisions, stating he had been emotionally struggling at the time.
“I was going through a lot and looking for an escape,” he reportedly admitted during the internal affairs review. “I made choices that don’t reflect my true character.”
While Ebell once thrived on the football field, his law enforcement career has now come to a permanent halt, leaving his future uncertain .
