Fatal Mushroom Poisoning in Utah: A Historic First

A tragic incident in Utah has resulted in one person’s death after consuming what they believed were psychedelic mushrooms, according to the Utah Poison Control Center.

In a press release, officials confirmed they were alerted to a suspected case of amatoxin-induced liver failure leading to death. The mushrooms, purchased on the street, were ingested by the individual, who subsequently experienced severe symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

The individual’s condition rapidly deteriorated, progressing to acute liver failure, acidosis, and hypotension. Despite medical intervention, they passed away approximately 36 hours after ingesting the mushrooms.

Amatoxin Poisoning: A Rare and Fatal Occurrence

Amatoxins, a group of toxic substances known to cause liver damage, are commonly found in mushroom species such as Amanita, Galerina, and Lepiota. In Utah, only the Galerina species is known to grow naturally.

Typically, psychedelic mushrooms do not cause liver toxicity. Officials described this case as “highly unusual” and emphasized that hepatotoxic mushrooms are rarely mistaken for their psychedelic counterparts.

“This is the first suspected case of amatoxin-induced liver failure reported in Utah,” the poison control center stated.

A Stark Warning

This incident highlights the dangers of consuming unverified substances purchased on the street. Officials urge the public to exercise extreme caution and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of mushroom poisoning occur, including severe gastrointestinal distress.
