McDonald’s is celebrating a major milestone for one of its most iconic menu items—the Egg McMuffin, which has been a breakfast favorite for five decades.
A Breakfast Classic Turns 50
First introduced in 1975, the Egg McMuffin revolutionized fast-food breakfast and remains a staple on the McDonald’s menu today. The sandwich was originally created in 1971 by franchisee Herb Peterson in Santa Barbara, California. His goal was to make a portable version of Eggs Benedict, and after presenting the concept to McDonald’s CEO Ray Kroc, the sandwich soon became a hit nationwide.
Herb Peterson’s son, David Peterson, now a McDonald’s franchisee himself, reflected on the sandwich’s legacy:
“Watching my father introduce the Egg McMuffin to Ray Kroc, we never imagined it would lay the foundation for McDonald’s breakfast menu. Seeing its success over the past 50 years is incredible, and now a new generation gets to enjoy it.”
Limited-Time McMuffin Deals
To mark the 50th anniversary, McDonald’s is rolling out special promotions throughout March:
- March 2 (National Egg McMuffin Day) – Customers can grab an Egg McMuffin or Sausage McMuffin with Egg for just $1 via the McDonald’s app.
- March 3-30 – A buy-one-get-one-free (BOGO) deal on the Sausage McMuffin with Egg, but only for those ordering through McDelivery on the app.
In addition to these specials, McDonald’s has officially brought back its bagel sandwiches to locations across the country, making them available nationwide as of February 25.
Unexpected Partnership with Krispy Kreme
McDonald’s surprised fans by announcing a collaboration with Krispy Kreme to bring fresh doughnuts to the McCafé menu. As of February 25, more than half of McDonald’s U.S. locations will begin offering Krispy Kreme treats, with a full nationwide rollout expected by 2026.

McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger emphasized the importance of breakfast to the brand:
“At McDonald’s, breakfast isn’t just another meal—it’s a tradition. Whether it’s an Egg McMuffin, crispy Hash Browns, fluffy hotcakes, or a McGriddle, we’re dedicated to helping our customers start their mornings right.”
McDonald’s Expands Chicken Offerings
McDonald’s isn’t just celebrating breakfast—it’s also doubling down on chicken. After a strong earnings report, the company revealed plans to grow its share of the chicken market by reintroducing chicken strips to the menu. This move has sparked speculation that fan-favorite Chicken Selects could make a comeback.
Additionally, McDonald’s confirmed that its beloved Snack Wraps—a longtime customer favorite—are also set to return.
CEO Chris Kempczinski shared the company’s ambitious plans:
“We see tremendous potential in our chicken offerings. Our goal is to grow our market share and solidify our position as a leader in this category by 2026.”
Looking Ahead
With its 50-year McMuffin celebration, an exciting Krispy Kreme partnership, and an expanded chicken menu, McDonald’s continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. Fans can expect more surprises throughout 2025 as the company rolls out its yearlong national breakfast campaign.
