Rosamond Woman Gets 14 Years for Fatally Shooting Boyfriend

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – A woman who admitted to fatally shooting her boyfriend outside a Rosamond motel has been sentenced to 14 years in prison, according to court records.

Gabriela Martinez, 30, pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter in connection with the death of Kevin Ramirez, 37. As part of a plea deal, prosecutors dropped a first-degree murder charge.

Conflicting Accounts of the Shooting

During the investigation, Martinez gave multiple explanations for what led to the shooting. She initially claimed self-defense, saying Ramirez had been abusive and she fired out of fear for her life. However, she later stated the gun discharged during a struggle when Ramirez attempted to take it from her. She also suggested that Ramirez had expressed suicidal intentions, according to court documents.

Surveillance Footage Captures Key Moments

The fatal shooting occurred late on Nov. 9, 2022, outside the Rosamond Palms Motel. Investigators reviewed surveillance video that showed the couple arguing near the motel’s entrance around 11:11 p.m.. Footage revealed Martinez holding a gun in her right hand, waving it and at one point, pointing it at Ramirez.

The argument continued as the two walked toward Rosamond Boulevard, stopping near the southeastern part of the property. Around 11:30 p.m., investigators noted a muzzle flash on the footage, indicating a gunshot had been fired. Moments later, only one person was seen walking away from the scene.

Ramirez’s body was later discovered in the same area where the flash had appeared.

Arrest and Sentencing

Authorities tracked Martinez down in Acton on Nov. 14, 2022, and arrested her.

Despite changing her story, Martinez ultimately accepted a plea agreement and was sentenced on Tuesday to 14 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter.
