Thousands of Americans could soon receive one-time payments of up to $5,000 as part of a multi-million dollar settlement over a data breach involving staffing agency Automation Personnel Services (APS). The company has agreed to pay nearly $1.4 million to settle a class action lawsuit stemming from a cyberattack that occurred in 2020.
The lawsuit, which claims APS failed to adequately protect sensitive data, alleges that the breach exposed personal information, including Social Security numbers and bank account details, to cybercriminals. APS announced the breach in March 2021, and those affected by the incident are eligible to file a claim for compensation.
While APS has not admitted to any wrongdoing, the company has agreed to the settlement, which allows claimants to receive up to $5,000 for losses related to the breach. These losses can include bank fees, fraudulent charges, and credit monitoring services. Claimants will need to provide documentation, such as receipts, bills, or bank statements, to support their claims.
Additionally, class members are eligible for compensation of up to four hours of lost time at a rate of $20 per hour, as well as one year of free credit monitoring through Identity Theft Guard Solutions.
The deadline for filing a claim is December 24, 2024, and all claims must be submitted under penalty of perjury. False claims will harm other eligible class members.

The class action lawsuit was originally filed by Tereas Madkin in July 2021, accusing APS of negligence for failing to protect the private information of its employees and customers. APS, which has over 40 locations and 37,000 employees, collects and stores sensitive personal information from individuals applying for jobs through the agency.
In other settlement news, Great Expressions, a nationwide network of dental care centers, is settling a class action lawsuit over a 2023 data breach that allegedly exposed sensitive consumer information. Similarly, protective equipment brand Magid Glove is offering a $5.175 million settlement related to the use of fingerprint time clocks and temperature scanners, and streaming service Tubi has agreed to pay $19.99 million in a settlement over privacy violations.
Other potential settlement payouts include refunds for certain Costco shoppers as part of a $3.875 million settlement and up to $2,500 for eligible Cash App users affected by a $15 million data breach settlement.
