The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified a previously recalled salad product as a Class I health risk, the agency’s most serious warning level.
Details of the Recall
FreshPoint Central Florida Inc. voluntarily recalled a limited number of its Garden Salad 5 oz on January 28 due to the presence of undeclared peanuts, which were a result of mislabeling. The FDA issued its risk classification on February 25.
The recall affected 18 units of the product distributed in Florida and Georgia. Consumers can identify the affected items by the following details:
- Lot number: 6620223
- UPC code: 766375733300
- Best-by date: February 5
Why It Matters
Peanuts are among the nine major food allergens recognized by the FDA, alongside milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, soy, and sesame. Exposure to these allergens can cause reactions ranging from mild symptoms like hives and swelling to life-threatening anaphylaxis, which can lead to difficulty breathing and loss of consciousness.

Expert Insight
Dr. Stefano Luccioli, an allergy specialist and medical officer with the FDA, emphasized the dangers of accidental allergen exposure. He noted that individuals with food allergies must always remain cautious, whether they are purchasing packaged food, dining out, or eating in someone else’s home.
What’s Next?
The FDA update on February 25 confirmed that the recall process has been completed. However, this case highlights the ongoing issue of undeclared allergens, which remain one of the leading causes of food recalls in the United States.
