A fish product sold in nine U.S. states has been recalled due to being produced in an ineligible facility for U.S. export and failing to undergo the required import reinspection, according to federal food safety authorities.
Why This Matters
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) classified the recall as a Class I health risk, indicating a high probability that consuming the product could lead to serious health consequences.
Despite the classification, as of February 25, no illnesses linked to the recalled catfish had been reported.
To put it into perspective, FSIS assigns recall classifications based on risk levels:
- Class I: A situation where consuming the product could cause serious health issues or death.
- Class II: The possibility of health consequences is low, and any effects would likely be temporary or reversible.
- Class III: The product is unlikely to cause harm, and the risk to consumers is minimal.

Details of the Recall
The affected product is peppered frozen, dried catfish, imported from Vietnam by C&T Produce Wholesale Inc., also known as L&V Food Supply. The 1,152-pound recall was issued after a routine FSIS surveillance check at a California retail store uncovered the issue.
The recalled catfish was distributed to retailers in the following states:
- California
- Florida
- Illinois
- Nebraska
- North Carolina
- Ohio
- Tennessee
- Washington
How to Identify the Recalled Product
The catfish was packaged in two-pound boxes labeled “Peppered Dried CATFISH.” FSIS emphasized that the recall applies to all production dates of this product.
Additionally, the items lack a USDA inspection mark or an establishment number, which are required for imported meat, poultry, and fish products.
Consumer Advisory
FSIS is urging consumers to check their refrigerators and freezers for the recalled product. If found, customers should either dispose of it or return it to the retailer.
The agency also noted that it regularly verifies recalls to ensure affected products are pulled from shelves and no longer available to the public.
For more information, FSIS will publish retail distribution lists on its official website when available.
