Santa Fe, NM – Authorities are still piecing together the events surrounding the tragic deaths of legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, after ruling out carbon monoxide poisoning as a cause.
The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department provided an update on Friday, confirming that the couple was found deceased at their home near Santa Fe on Wednesday. Their family dog was also found dead, while two other dogs survived.
Unraveling the Timeline
Authorities revealed that the couple had likely been deceased for several days before a maintenance worker discovered their bodies. Sheriff Adan Mendoza shared that Hackman, 95, had a pacemaker, which recorded its last activity on Feb. 17—almost a week before the discovery.
However, investigators have yet to determine who passed away first.

Clues and Key Findings
Several prescription pills were recovered at the scene and are being analyzed by the medical examiner’s office. Investigators also seized cell phones, electronic devices, and a 2025 planner, which could help establish a clearer timeline of events.
While surveillance footage could have provided crucial insights, officials noted that no known cameras were present on the property, as the couple valued their privacy.
Hackman was reportedly found in an entryway, while Arakawa, 65, was discovered in the bathroom. A space heater was lying next to her head, leading investigators to believe it may have toppled over when she collapsed.
A Mysterious Case
Initially, authorities did not suspect foul play. However, after executing search warrants, officials reconsidered and launched a more in-depth investigation. Despite the unusual circumstances, Mendoza reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
A Legacy Remembered
Hackman was a five-time Academy Award nominee, securing Best Actor for The French Connection (1972) and Best Supporting Actor for Unforgiven (1992). Arakawa, a classically trained pianist from Hawaii, was widely respected in the music world.
Jennifer LaBar-Tapia, Santa Fe’s film commissioner, paid tribute to Hackman’s lasting impact, stating, “His talent will be remembered for generations. His film legacy is unparalleled.”
Authorities have promised to release more details as the investigation continues .
