Chris Kluwe, a former Minnesota Vikings punter, claims he was dismissed from his role as a high school football coach after being arrested while participating in a peaceful protest.
On Thursday, Kluwe took to social media to reveal that Edison High School in Huntington Beach had terminated him following his civil disobedience at a recent city council meeting. The controversy centered around a plaque celebrating the 50th anniversary of the city’s Central Library, which included the politically charged acronym “MAGA.”
The Protest That Led to His Arrest
Kluwe joined a group of demonstrators earlier this month to oppose the plaque’s design, arguing that it represented divisive political messaging rather than an inclusive tribute to the library.
During the public comment period, Kluwe delivered a passionate speech criticizing the “MAGA” movement, asserting that it promotes discrimination, censorship, and anti-democratic values.
“MAGA seeks to erase trans people, resegregate society, and ban books,” Kluwe said during the meeting. “It is fundamentally corrupt and authoritarian.”
As his speech concluded, Kluwe calmly approached the council with his hands behind his back, signaling his intent to be arrested for his act of civil disobedience. The room erupted in cheers from fellow protesters, but the council ultimately voted to approve the plaque with minor design modifications and additional security.
Fallout from the Protest
Following his arrest, Kluwe says he was let go from his role as freshman football coach at Edison High School.

“Just got fired from coaching freshman football,” Kluwe posted on Bluesky. “If you want to know what MAGA does to communities, look no further.”
He criticized the decision, arguing that the school prioritized politics over having an experienced coach. “They won’t find another ex-NFL player willing to coach at this level, but that doesn’t matter to them.”
School District Remains Silent
The Huntington Beach Union High School District has yet to comment on Kluwe’s dismissal. Despite the lack of an official statement, his firing has sparked debate, with many supporting his right to peaceful protest while others argue that coaches should remain apolitical.
Kluwe Continues to Speak Out
A longtime resident of Huntington Beach, Kluwe has been outspoken on social and political issues since retiring from the NFL in 2013. He has been a strong advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and has criticized the NFL’s response to issues of racial justice and player activism.
Despite losing his coaching job, Kluwe remains unapologetic, continuing to call out Trump and the MAGA movement on social media.
“What’s happening in Huntington Beach reflects what’s happening across the country,” he wrote. “MAGA isn’t about community—it’s about self-interest at any cost.”
Though he received at least one job offer following his firing, Kluwe politely declined, choosing instead to focus on his activism and next steps .
