LOS ANGELES — In an effort to bolster wildfire prevention ahead of peak fire season, Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Saturday to accelerate critical projects aimed at protecting California communities.
The emergency declaration aims to remove bureaucratic barriers, including suspending the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the Coastal Act, which Newsom said have slowed down essential forest management efforts.
“We’ve already seen some of the most destructive wildfires in our state’s history—and it’s only March,” Newsom said. “We’re cutting through red tape and making historic investments to fast-track the wildfire prevention projects needed to protect our most vulnerable communities.”

Key Provisions of the Proclamation:
- Regulatory Suspensions: Temporarily lifts environmental regulations, including CEQA and the Coastal Act, to expedite fuel reduction projects such as vegetation clearing, tree removal, firebreak construction, and controlled burns.
- Expanded Fuels Reduction Efforts: Grants non-state organizations the ability to conduct approved fire prevention work with an accelerated approval process.
- Increased Use of Prescribed Burns: Directs state agencies to develop strategies to scale up prescribed fire operations.
- Enhanced Efficiency of Vegetation Treatment Programs: Aims to streamline environmental reviews for large-scale wildfire mitigation efforts.
Additionally, Newsom is urging Congress to approve nearly $40 billion in federal aid to support Los Angeles’ recovery from the devastating January wildfires. Officials estimate that the Palisades and Eaton fires—fueled by hurricane-force winds exceeding 100 mph—destroyed more than 16,250 structures, making it one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history.
Newsom emphasized that these actions are part of California’s broader strategy to strengthen wildfire resilience, safeguard communities, and reduce the impact of increasingly severe fire seasons .
