How Much Do Californians Need to Be Secure? $188K for Families of Four

A new analysis by GO Banking Rates reveals that financial security for the traditional “family of four” in America now requires an annual income of at least $100,000 in 26 states, highlighting the escalating cost of living across the country.

The study, which draws on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center, calculated the living wage as income needed to cover 50% of necessities, 30% for discretionary spending, and 20% for savings.

California tops the list with the highest living wage, requiring an eye-popping $188,269 annually for a family of four. The state’s housing costs alone average $45,891 per year, with groceries costing $19,549 and healthcare expenses totaling $8,213.

As rising costs continue to outpace wage growth, families across the nation are feeling the financial strain.
