California (Thechieftainspear) – A current and a former employee of California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) are facing felony charges after allegedly embezzling $36,560 from the school’s athletics department, prosecutors revealed Monday.
Allegations of Fraudulent Timesheets
According to Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman, the two men—Oscar Perez Almanza, 39, and Hender Noe Maxwell, 38—are accused of conspiring to submit false timesheets in 2022, claiming payment for work that was never performed.
Both suspects have been charged with one count of conspiracy to commit grand theft and one count of grand theft, with prosecutors stating that the alleged scheme demonstrated planning and sophistication.

How the Alleged Scheme Worked
Investigators say that throughout 2022, Almanza was employed as a field supervisor, while Maxwell had already left his position as a grounds worker in the athletics department. Despite this, Maxwell continued submitting fraudulent timesheets, claiming he had worked hundreds of hours at CSULB.
Authorities allege that Almanza knowingly approved these timesheets, allowing Maxwell to receive payments for nonexistent work. The two then allegedly split the stolen money, which totaled more than $36,000.
Legal Proceedings and Potential Sentences
During their arraignment on Monday, both men entered not guilty pleas. They were released on their own recognizance, with the condition that they surrender their passports.
The defendants are scheduled to return to court on April 14. If convicted, they could face up to three years in county jail .
